The problem with a static QR code on your card

You print 500 business cards with a QR code pointing to your LinkedIn. Three months later you change jobs. The LinkedIn URL is the same — but your title, company, and email all changed. So you update your LinkedIn.

With a static code, all 500 cards still work fine. But what if you had pointed it to your company profile page, your old portfolio, or a personal domain that lapsed? Those cards would be broken — and reprinting costs money.

A dynamic QR code from Scanta lets you change the destination from a dashboard at any time. Every card in existence immediately points to the new address.

Designing a business card around a QR code

A QR code on a business card replaces three problems with one solution. The first problem: people lose business cards. The second: even when they keep them, they rarely manually type a website URL into their phone. The third: cards become outdated the moment your job, role, or website changes. A QR code addresses the second by making the link one tap away, and a dynamic QR code addresses the third by letting you redirect that scan to wherever your information currently lives.

The most common destination for a business card QR code is a LinkedIn profile, but that's not always the right choice. A LinkedIn URL is reasonably stable, but visitors land on a generic profile page covered in unrelated suggested content. If you have a personal website or portfolio, that's usually a better destination — you control the design, the call-to-action, and what visitors see first. For people who change jobs frequently or freelance across multiple specialties, a dynamic QR code gives you the option to redirect as priorities shift.

Where to position the QR code

The back of the card is the conventional choice — it keeps the front clean for your name, role, and contact information, while the back becomes the "tap here" surface. Some designers prefer to integrate the code into the front with a clear call-to-action like "scan for portfolio." Either works. What matters is that the code is at least 0.7 inches (1.8 cm) on each side, has clear quiet space around it, and contrasts strongly with the background — black on white scans most reliably across a wide range of phone cameras.

vCard vs landing page

A vCard URL prompts the recipient to save your contact details directly to their phone, which is useful for high-volume networking. A landing page (your portfolio, LinkedIn, or company site) gives the recipient context — who you are, what you do, what work to look at — but requires an extra tap to add you to contacts. Many people use a digital business card service that combines both: a single page with your bio, a "save contact" button, and links to your work. With a dynamic Scanta code you can experiment between these without reprinting.

Why dynamic matters here specifically

Business cards have an unusual lifecycle: they get printed in batches of 100 to 500, get distributed slowly over months or years, and are often the first impression for an introduction. Half of those cards may not be scanned for six months or longer. If your URL has changed in that window — and you used a static code — every late scan goes to a broken page. A dynamic code from Scanta means the latest holder of an old card still lands on your current website, even if you printed the card years ago.

Frequently asked questions

Can I update a QR code on a business card I've already printed?

Yes — if you used a dynamic QR code from Scanta. Log into your dashboard and change the destination URL. All cards already in circulation will now redirect to the new address. The physical code on the card doesn't change.

What should the QR code on my business card link to?

The most common options are your LinkedIn profile, a personal website or portfolio, a digital contact card (vCard), or a booking/calendar link. With a dynamic QR code you can switch between any of these later.

Will the QR code work after I change jobs?

Yes. If you used a Scanta dynamic QR code, you can update the destination URL in your dashboard. Change it to your new LinkedIn, new company website, or personal portfolio — the card keeps working.

Is there an expiry on free codes?

No. Scanta dynamic QR codes do not expire on the free plan. They redirect indefinitely.

Will the QR code have a watermark or branding on it?

No. Scanta does not add watermarks or branded logos to QR codes on any plan.
